Karla Callaway, Magnolia, TX – Email

SAI Member: 30+ years
Sings:  Lead
Current Affiliation:  The Woodlands Show Chorus, Sympatico Quartet
Quartets you’ve been a part of:  Sympatico, Rave, Vibe, High Five, Fired Up!, Hot Topic, Sound Unlimited, Rose City Review, Second Glance, Mistaken Identity, Jubilee, Sheer Pleasure
Chorus Level Management: Director, Music Staff including Assistant Director, Section Leader, Vocal Specialist, New Member Education coordinator, Show Chair, Audition Loop Coordinator, Marketing Chair for TWSC
Regional Level Management or Appointment: Region 24-Coach, DMA/EC Staff, PVI Coordinator, Education Faculty
International Level Management or Appointment: Certified Director and Arranger
Additional SAI Experience:  Karla’s coaching emphasis would lie in good vocal production for the foundation of everything we do as singers. She not only is drawn to the Sound category as it relates to vocal production, the Barbershop Sound, tuning and artistry but also can address other musical issues like notes, chords, synchronization, tempo etc. Her coaching style is direct but positive.  She has spent a lot of time researching and learning about the voice, learning the Why’s of vocal exercises as well as giving Private Vocal Instructional (PVI) lessons over the years.  Karla loves to give PVI’s to help singers be aware of their own voice and how to use it!

Karla has been a front-line director for a successful small chorus of 25 singers who achieved 2nd place in Region 24 (now absolved).  She has a very good understanding of the needs and struggles of a small chorus and is passionate about bridging the gap in education to the directors to strengthen the core skills of the many small choruses in our region. I am a Certified Director and Arranger (from time to time).
Fun Facts:  In Karla’s professional life, she is an Account Manager for group of diverse customers in the Houston area with an emphasis on account development, engineering resources, and just in time delivery.   This has allowed Karla to develop strong time management skills as well as multi-tasking in order to accomplish her goals. Because sales is a “people” job it requires good problem solving skills as well as the ability to clearly communicate with others.
What SAI Means to Me:  “It is important to me that each singer feel empowered to know their own voice and in turn, contribute positively to the unit.  I love to explore different ways to explain how to do something so that it resonates with singers to achieve that “Ah-ha” moment.”
